What types of shingles does GAF offer?
GAF has 7 different shingle options for homeowners in the Seattle area. While all of the shingles are usually made out of the same material, each one has unique features and benefits.
To help make it easier to compare the shingles and their features, this article will organize the shingles by splitting them into three categories:
- 3-Tab Shingles
- Standard Architectural Shingles
- Premium Luxury Shingles
Comparing the shingles on GAF’s website can be tricky because a lot of the features and product descriptions of the shingles are similar. GAF does have a comparison option where you can select up to 4 shingles and compare them using a chart:

This chart does show the distinction between shingle types and costs, but it mainly focuses on the warranty features for each shingle. This is useful information, but it doesn’t help you decide if the features of the shingle match your needs and preferences.
In this article, the shingles will be compared to one another (within each category) so that you understand what the difference is between each one.
3-Tab Shingles
3-tab shingles are the most budget-friendly shingle option, giving your roof a simple, classic shingle look. They used to be more common, but they are starting to phase out in favor of the more durable architectural shingles.
1. Royal Sovereign
The Royal Sovereign offers a flat, uniform appearance with basic weather protection. It is less dimensional and less durable than architectural or luxury shingles.
Standard Architectural Shingles
Architectural shingles are the go-to option for homeowners in the Seattle area who want good coverage on their roof for an affordable price. They are dimensional and layered, which sets them apart from a 3-tab shingle.
2. Timberline HDZ
The Timberline HDZ is GAF’s most popular dimensional shingle, known for its balance of cost, durability, and enhanced wind resistance. It has a layered look that gives it more depth. This type of shingle is the most popular option for Seattle-area homeowners because it offers good protection at an affordable price.
3. Timberline NS
The Timberline NS is an economical architectural shingle with a simpler design. Provides the dimensional look of higher-end Timberline products but with fewer color options and slightly reduced thickness.
Premium Luxury Shingles
Premium luxury shingles offer the best of both worlds: style and functionality. You get longer-lasting, more durable shingles. Some of them even imitate the look of slate or shake roofs.
4. Timberline UHDZ
The Timberline UHDZ is the upgraded version of HDZ with extra thickness, deeper shadow lines, and enhanced impact resistance. It has a more pronounced dimensional look than the standard HDZ.
This is great for Seattle homeowners who want an asphalt shingle that lasts longer.
5. Timberline AS II
The Timberline AS II is a class 4 impact-resistant luxury shingle. It is built for durability in severe weather, making it a good option for Seattle windstorms. It offers superior hail and debris protection compared to other Timberline models.
6. Camelot II
The Camelot II is a high-end designer shingle with a slate-like appearance. Its thicker profile and unique cut patterns set it apart from standard architectural shingles.
7. Woodland
The Woodland is designed to mimic the look of hand-cut European wood shake. The thick, angular tabs give a rustic, upscale look that elevates your home’s curb appeal.
8. Grand Sequoia
The Grand Sequoia is another luxury shingle option by GAF that imitates the look of wood shake with oversized tabs and rugged shadowing. It is thicker and more textured than Woodland.
Solar Shingles
Solar shingles are a relatively new category that offers homeowners the opportunity to take advantage of solar energy without the added hassle of installing entire solar panels.
9. GAF Energy Timberline Solar ES 2
The GAF Energy Timberline Solar ES 2 is an architectural shingle integrated with solar panels. Functions as both a roof covering and a solar energy system, making it unique in this category. It is compatible to be installed with other GAF Timberline shingles.
How do I know which GAF shingle is right for me?
In order to choose the best shingle for your home, you need to know what your budget, preferences, and needs are. This will help you narrow down your priorities.
For example, are you looking for the lowest cost option? Or do you want the longest-lasting asphalt shingle available? Make sure that you’re looking for shingles that have all or most of the features and benefits that you’re looking for.
To make this comparison more efficient, here’s a table that lists out all of the available shingle options from GAF and their key features.
