4 min read

By Jim Singleterry

TL;DR: Summary

Owens Corning provides a versatile shingle lineup ranging from the budget-friendly Oakridge to the ultra-durable, rubberized Duration FLEX. The standout feature across the Duration series is the patented SureNail® Technology, which provides superior wind resistance and grip. For Seattle homeowners, the choice often lands between the standard Duration for reliable performance or Duration FLEX, which uses SBS polymer-modified asphalt to resist cracking in cold temperatures and better retain protective granules against the PNW's heavy rains.

What types of shingles does Owens Corning offer?

Owens Corning has 7 different shingle options for homeowners in the Seattle area. While all of the shingles are usually made out of the same material, each one has unique features and benefits.

To help make it easier to compare the shingles and their features, this article will organize the shingles by splitting them into three categories:

  • Standard Architectural Shingles
  • Thicker Luxury Shingles
  • Rubberized Asphalt Shingles

Owens Corning has a lot of great, detailed information about each shingle to help you understand the features each one has.

However, they don’t currently have a quick comparison feature to help you see how each shingle is different. That’s why we wrote this article, so you can see how each shingle is different from the others.

Standard Architectural Shingles

Architectural shingles are a classic go-to option for Seattle homeowners (and others across the country) because they are the most affordable roofing option that still offers good protection.

1. Oakridge®

The Oakridge is a builder-grade, entry-level architectural shingle that provides a step up from traditional 3-tab shingles with a dimensional look. It is more affordable than the Duration series but has less advanced reinforcement technology, and it is thinner.

2. Duration®

The Duration shingle is the main option in Owens Corning’s architectural shingle line. It is their version of the standard architectural shingle. It features Owens Corning’s patented SureNail® Technology for better wind resistance and easier installation. It is thicker and more durable than the Oakridge.

3. Duration Designer®

The Duration Designer has the same core features as the Duration but with multi-tone color blends. It is designed for homeowners who want a bold, upscale look without hitting luxury pricing.

4. Duration Premium®

The Duration Premium is an upgraded version of the Duration with enhanced aesthetics and better performance. It has a thicker appearance and improved durability compared to the standard Duration.

Thicker Luxury Shingles

Luxury shingles are thicker than standard architectural shingles, and they have a unique design. These shingles are designed to imitate the look of wood shake or slate tiles to give you roof an elevated, luxury feel without the high cost of the actual product.

5. Duration MAX®

The Duration Max is an extra-thick architectural shingle with a bold, rugged look. It is heavier than standard Duration shingles, which adds depth and enhanced durability. It also mimics the aesthetic of wood shake roofing while maintaining asphalt performance.

It has no copper granule in it, so it has no algae resistance like the other shingles in the line.

*Please note that this product has limited availability for Seattle area homeowners. Make sure to discuss your options with your roofing contractor.

6. Woodmoor® and Woodcrest® (Honorable Mentions – currently unavailable)

These shingles do not get made to the same scale as other more commonly chosen products, so there isn’t always availability. Make sure that you and your roofing contractor check availability before you make your final decision.

The Woodmoor is a very thick, heavyweight luxury shingle designed to replicate cedar shake. It offers deep shadow lines and high dimensionality. It is one of Owens Corning’s heaviest options when available.

The Woodmoor

The Woodcrest is slightly less thick than Woodmoor, but it is still in the luxury category. It is designed for a wood shake appearance at a somewhat lower cost than Woodmoor.

Rubberized Asphalt Shingles

Rubberized asphalt shingles are regular asphalt shingles that are reinforced with rubber materials to make them stronger and more flexible. They cost a bit more than standard shingles, but they usually last 5 to 10 years longer.

7. Duration FLEX®

The Duration FLEX incorporates SBS (styrene-butadiene-styrene) polymer-modified asphalt for added flexibility. This gives it superior impact resistance compared to standard architectural shingles.

It is ideal for Seattle’s fluctuating weather since it’s less likely to crack in cold temperatures or warp in heat. The rubber also helps the granule stick better, promoting a longer service life by keeping more granules in place than a standard shingle would.

How do I know which Owens Corning shingle is right for me?

In order to choose the best shingle for your home, you need to know what your budget, preferences, and needs are. This will help you narrow down your priorities.

For example, are you looking for the lowest cost option? Or do you want the longest-lasting asphalt shingle available? Make sure that you’re looking for shingles that have all or most of the features and benefits that you’re looking for.

To make this comparison more efficient, here’s a table that lists out all of the available shingle options from Owens Corning and their key features:

How much will your Owens Corning roof actually cost in Seattle?

Now that you’ve seen the full breakdown of Owens Corning’s shingle options (from basic architectural to luxury and rubberized), you likely have a better sense of which product fits your home’s needs, your design preferences, and your long-term goals.

But one key question remains: how much will your new roof actually cost to install here in the Seattle area?

Your next step is to read our article How Much Does a Roof Cost in 2025? Prices for Seattle Homeowners” where we explain real pricing ranges based on roof size, material choice, and labor factors specific to our region.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What makes Owens Corning "SureNail" technology different?

SureNail is a unique fabric reinforcing strip built into the nailing zone of the Duration series. It provides a visible "sweet spot" for installers and significantly increases the shingle's grip, allowing for a 130-mph wind warranty with fewer nails than competitor products.

2. Is the Oakridge shingle a good choice for Seattle?

Oakridge is an entry-level architectural shingle. While more affordable, it is thinner and lacks the SureNail fabric strip found in the Duration line. For the heavy winds and rain common in the Pacific Northwest, upgrading to a sturdier shingle is usually recommended.

3. What is Duration FLEX and why is it recommended for cold weather?

Duration FLEX is a polymer-modified (rubberized) shingle. The SBS rubber makes it much more flexible, which prevents the shingles from becoming brittle and cracking during winter installations or freezing temperature cycles.

4. Do Owens Corning shingles protect against algae streaks?

Most Duration shingles include StreakGuard™ Algae Resistance, using copper-lined granules to inhibit the growth of cyanobacteria (black streaks). However, be aware that the Duration MAX line typically lacks these copper granules and may not offer the same resistance.

5. What are Duration Designer shingles?

These have the same technical specifications as the standard Duration line but feature premium, multi-tone color blends. They are designed for homeowners who want their roof to have a high-contrast, "designer" look without the cost of luxury heavy-weight shingles.

6. Why is Duration MAX often unavailable in Seattle?

Duration MAX is a specialty thick shingle designed to mimic wood shake. Because it isn't produced at the same scale as the standard Duration line, regional availability can fluctuate significantly.

7. How does Owens Corning compare to CertainTeed rubberized shingles?

Both brands offer high-quality rubberized options. You can compare the Owens Corning Duration FLEX against the CertainTeed Landmark ClimateFlex to see which polymer-modified shingle offers the best value for your specific roof pitch and budget.

8. Will Owens Corning shingles help prevent attic mold?

The shingles themselves act as a barrier, but your roof's health depends on airflow. You should check for signs that your attic does not have proper ventilation to ensure moisture doesn't rot your decking from underneath your new shingles.

9. Can I install solar panels on Owens Corning shingles?

Yes, but since traditional solar racks require drilling into the shingles, it may affect your warranty. Consider the pros and cons of solar panels in Seattle before deciding whether to mount an array on your new roof.

10. Does the Owens Corning warranty cover the cost to remove my gutter guards?

No. If a warranty repair is needed, the manufacturer only covers the shingles. If you have premium protection installed, you should check if MasterShield guards need to be removed during roof work and who is responsible for the labor to reset them.
