Meet the Hazard Gang

Every roof problem starts somewhere. Usually it starts with one of these guys.

The Hazard Gang is a crew of troublemakers: water, mold, heat, cold, cracks and critters. They go after Seattle-area roofs all year. One of them gets in, and he brings his friends. Here's who they are, what each one does to a roof, and what to watch for.

Your side has someone too: The Chief Nerd (that's Jim, RoofSmart's founder) and our team of meticulous roofing nerds. We treat your roof as a system and catch problems early, before the gang spreads.

The Hazard Gang: RoofSmart's roof-damage villains
The hazard: water and leaks

Hydro: the sneaky one

Hydro doesn't need a storm. He finds a gap or a crack, soaks in, and once he's inside he brings more troublemakers with him. In rainy Seattle, leaks are one of the top worries homeowners have, and an older or poorly installed roof makes it easy for him.

Watch for: water stains on ceilings, damp or dark spots in the attic, missing or lifted shingles, worn flashing around chimneys and vents.

The hazard: attic mold

Spore: the guest who won't leave

Spore shows up after Hydro, unannounced, and stays way too long. One leak can be enough to let him in. Once he's settled, he spreads, and getting rid of him can mean pulling insulation, replacing some boards and treating the whole attic.

Watch for: a musty attic smell, dark spotting on roof sheathing, damp insulation, frost or condensation in the attic in winter.

The hazard: cracking masonry, chimneys and structure

Crackzilla: small cracks, big trouble

Crackzilla starts tiny. Hydro seeps into small cracks, a few freeze-thaw cycles go by, and those small cracks turn serious. Your chimney isn't safe either: gaps along its sides and top let water get inside the roof.

Watch for: cracked or crumbling chimney mortar, gaps where the chimney meets the roof, cracks that get bigger after winter.

The hazard: pests in rotting wood

Chomp: the one who eats your house

Once Hydro and Spore have left the attic wood damp and rotting, Chomp moves in and starts eating. Pests make the decay go faster, and most people don't notice until it's already bad.

Watch for: droppings, mud tubes, sagging ceilings, or a home inspector flagging it during a sale.

The hazard: sun and UV wear

Sir Scorch: the slow burn

Sir Scorch doesn't need a storm either. Day after day, he cooks your roof with UV rays until he and his friends cause even bigger problems. Yes, even in cloudy Seattle. Manufacturer warranties usually count this as normal wear and tear, so it isn't covered.

Watch for: granules piling up in gutters, bald or cracked shingles, a roof that looks fine from the street but rough up close.

The hazard: freezing temperatures and ice dams

Mr. Freeze: the cold one

On his own, Mr. Freeze isn't too dangerous. But once Sir Scorch has cracked your roof and Hydro has soaked it, he can make a mess fast. He builds ice dams that push water up under the shingles and into your attic and ceilings.

Watch for: icicles and ice buildup along the eaves, water stains after a cold snap, uneven snow melt on the roof.

The homeowner who tried to fix it himself

Freddie Fracture: the guy who tried to fix it himself

Freddie Fracture isn't a roof hazard. He's a homeowner. He spotted Hydro's drip, grabbed a ladder and a tube of caulk, and figured he'd have it handled by lunch. He didn't. The leak is still there, and now so is Freddie Fracture's sprained wrist, his bruised pride and a ladder lying in the flower bed.

Don't be like Freddie Fracture. Ladders and slick Seattle roofs don't mix, and ladder falls are no joke (source: an analysis of CDC WONDER, ICD-10 W11, 2018-2024). Let us go up there for you. We'll find what's really causing the leak and tell you straight what it needs.
