What are the benefits of choosing an Owens Corning Duration series shingle?

Owens Corning’s Duration series is one of the more common ones that offers a wide range of options. Here are the benefits of choosing shingles from the Owens Corning Duration series:

• Algae resistance technology: Duration series shingles are created with copper-lined granules mixed in with the regular ones. Including copper-lined granules helps protect the shingles from growing algae because copper is naturally resistant to it. These shingles are nice to have for Seattle homeowners because they can help protect the roof from algae growth for longer. However, it’s good to keep in mind that in a damp, rainy area like Seattle, it’s likely that your asphalt shingle roof will eventually grow algae and moss.
• Access to a premium warranty: Owens Corning offers a strong premium-level warranty that can be used on the Duration Series shingles if you meet the right requirements, which include hiring a contractor who is certified by Owens Corning. The premium warranty provides the best protection, but they also have a variety of other lower-level warranties that you can choose from.
• Class A fire resistance: The Duration and the Duration FLEX are both advertised as Class A fire-resistant materials. This means that they have the highest rating for resistance to catching fire and spreading flames.
• 160 MPH wind warranty: Starting on August 1st, 2026, Owens Corning began offering a wind warranty for winds up to 160 mph for all of the Duration series products. This warranty only applies if you meet their specific requirements for which materials are used on the roof and how they are installed.
• Triple layer reinforcement: Owens Corning builds their Duration series shingles with what they call SureNail technology. With this design, there are three layers in the nailing zone (other shingles only have two layers). This makes for a more secure and durable nailing job.

How is the Owens Corning Duration FLEX shingle different than the Duration shingle?

Although all of the Duration series shingles share the same benefits, there are still some key differences between the Duration and the Duration FLEX.

The Duration FLEX is made with SBS polymer-modified asphalt (aka rubberized asphalt), while the Duration is made with the standard asphalt mix. This gives the Duration FLEX the following benefits:

• Increased lifespan: Choosing an SBS polymer-modified shingle like the Duration FLEX can give you an additional 5 to 10 years on the life of your roof. A standard architectural shingle like the Duration is expected to last around 15 to 25 years in the Seattle area.
• Better flexibility: Rubberized asphalt shingles are much more flexible than regular asphalt shingles, even in cold weather. This means that a polymer-modified asphalt shingle is much less likely to be brittle and crack during installation in colder weather.
• Class 4 impact resistance: Another perk of SBS-modified shingles is that they are bouncier and more durable than standard asphalt shingles. This gives your roof better protection from impact damage caused by tree branches or small debris. The Duration FLEX has a Class 4 impact resistance rating, which is the highest rating possible. On the other hand, the Duration has a Class 3 rating.

Although there are many benefits to choosing a polymer-modified shingle, it’s important to note that there are also a few cons that you won’t run into with a standard architectural shingle like the Duration:

• Less color availability: The Duration FLEX is only available in 9 colors, while the Duration has 21 different color options. The Duration FLEX comes in a lot of the same colors as the Duration, but because the materials in each shingle are slightly different, the colors might not look the same in person. However, on the website, they use the same picture for both of them.

• Easier to scuff on a hot day: One downside of the SBS polymer-modified shingles is that they get much softer in the sun than a standard shingle does, which puts them at a higher risk of being scuffed. It’s something to consider if you want to install Duration FLEX shingles in the summer. The good news is that there are rarely super hot days in the Seattle area.

What is the cost difference between the Owens Corning Duration and the Owens Corning Duration FLEX?

The other difference between these two shingles is that Duration FLEX costs more than the Duration. If you’re buying in the Seattle area, you can expect the Duration FLEX to add about 10% to the total cost of your roof replacement.

In the Seattle area, we typically see Duration FLEX add about 10% to the total cost of a roof replacement. If you don’t need the added durability or cold-weather flexibility, the standard Duration may give you the performance you need without paying for features that aren’t a priority for your home.
